What do You Need to Know about Rectifier Transformer?

Publish Time: 2023-08-25     Origin: Site

A Rectifier Transformer is a special type of Transformer that is used to convert alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC) in a rectification system. Rectification is the process of changing the direction of current flow so that it is always in one direction. Rectifier Transformers are widely used in industrial applications that require high currents and low voltages, such as aluminum electrolysis, steel making, electric arc furnaces, and DC traction. In this article, we will introduce the features, characteristics, and working principle of rectiformers.

  • What are the features of Rectifier Transformer?

  • What are the characteristics of Rectifier Transformer?

  • How does Rectifier Transformer work?

What are the features of Rectifier Transformer?

1. They have a high secondary voltage regulation range, which means they can adjust the output voltage according to the load and the number of rectifier units connected in series or parallel.

2. They have a low leakage reactance, which reduces the voltage drop and power loss in the Transformer.

3. They have a high short-circuit impedance, which limits the fault current and protects the Transformer and the rectifier units from damage.

4. They have a high harmonic suppression capability, which means they can filter out the unwanted harmonics generated by the rectifier units and improve the power quality.

5. They have a high thermal stability, which means they can withstand the high temperature and current fluctuations caused by the rectification process.

What are the characteristics of Rectifier Transformer?

1. They have different types of connections on the primary and secondary sides, depending on the type of rectifier units. For example, a double star (DSS) system uses an interphase Transformer and connects the secondary windings in star configuration; a double bridge (DB) system connects the secondary windings in bridge configuration; and so on.

2. They have different ratings and dimensions, depending on the power and voltage requirements of the rectifier system. For example, a rectiformer for aluminum electrolysis may have a rating of up to 160 MVA and a voltage of up to 2,000 VDC; a Rectifier Transformer for electric arc furnace may have a rating of up to 200 MVA and a voltage of up to 1,000 VDC; and so on.

How does Rectifier Transformer work?

1. The primary winding of the Rectifier Transformer receives AC voltage from the power grid or another source.

2. The secondary windings of the Rectifier Transformer produce AC voltages with different phases and magnitudes according to the number of pulses and connections of the rectifier system.

3. The rectifier units receive AC voltages from the secondary windings and use diodes or thyristors to switch them on and off at certain intervals, creating pulses of DC voltage.

4. The DC voltages from different rectifier units are combined in series or parallel to obtain the desired output voltage and current.

5. The output DC voltage is then filtered by capacitors or inductors to smooth out the ripples and harmonics.

Rectifier Transformers are essential components of rectification systems that convert AC to DC for various industrial applications. They have special features, characteristics, and working principles that make them different from ordinary Transformers. By understanding how they work, you can choose the right type and configuration of Rectifier Transformer for your specific needs.
